Berja
Town situated at the foot of the Sierra de Gador, in the west of
the province, in the natural passage up from the coast to the
Alpujarra or vice versa. Its municipal AREA stretches from the
Sierra de Gador to the coast, so its landscape is therefore varied
depending on the place. The most notable characteristic is the
greenhouse farming which is ever more common and which, in contrast
to the wealth it provides, means the landscape, beauty and
environmental preservation pay a high price.
The town is made up of numerous dispersed districts which are grouped around one of the also numerous water sources which irrigate the land. Alcaudique, Beneji, Castala, Chiran, Peñarrodada, Beninar, Rio Chico, Balanegra, Rio Grande, S. Roque and Berja itself, where the official administrative activity of the municipality and its services are concentrated.
