Fernán Núñez
History
In ancient times it was part of the old Ibero-Roman city of "Ulia".
Its present-day name dates back to the 13th century, when, in the
wake of the Christian conquest of the AREA, it was applied to one
of the Moslem towers that stood here.
The village was founded in 1382, when lordly privilege was granted
by John I to don Diego Gutierrez de los Rios.
The village remained under the control of the Gutierrez de los Rios
family, and was declared an earldom in 1639 and, later, a dukedom
(1815), the title of duke being granted by Ferdinand VII to Carlos
Jose Gutierrez de los Rios.
