The origin of the village's name is explained in a Letter of Privilege, which is preserved in the Town Hall, given by King Don Enrique to the Archbishop of Toledo Don Pedro Tenorio in 1396, approving that the place known as La Moraleda could be renamed Villanueva del Arzobispo. The village was founded this way, with some bylaws and the obligation of the neighbours to wall the village in five years time.
