The Nativity Scene is an important symbol of Christmas in Spain. These representations of the birth of Jesus can be seen in the squares of cities, towns and villages alike, as well as in the doorways of houses and in shop windows.
Visiting Nativity Scenes has become a tradition for many families in Andalusia.
Every year, people work on hundreds of nativity scenes to be found in all the different provinces of the region. Some of the most outstanding and full of detail are the nativity scenes constructed by the “La Roldana” association in Seville, or the Nativity Scene association in Jerez. It is well worthwhile seeing these careful reconstructions of landscapes inspired by those of Jordan and Israel.
|Every year in Rute (Cordoba), they make a nativity scene moulded from more than 800 kg of chocolate.|
You can usually find several nativity scenes in most towns. Some are larger than others, but they are all works of art created with the utmost care.
Nativity Scene competitions and the exhibitions afterwards are a good reason to learn more about this deeply rooted Andalusian tradition.
Living Nativity Scenes in Andalusia, a living tradition.
It's not only thinking about or visiting the Nativity Scenes. In Andalusia there is a strong custom of "acting out" the different biblical scenes associated with the birth of Jesus, offering a unique reason to visit these towns and their interesting Living Nativity Scenes.
These aren't the only Living Nativity Scenes in Andalusia, although they are the most representative and the ones for which we've been able to compile sufficient information for publishing.
If you know of any others and you'd like us to publish it, send information, pictures, videos, etc. to our Facebook page.
