When, in 1917, it began to carry out the first excavations in the area of Bolonia, the researchers found the remains of a prosperous city, built according to the canons of classical Rome, according to an urban development project planned and perfectly rational.
With the ruins of Baelo, Cadiz province preserves one of the best examples of Roman urbanism that is known. Some buildings are of the era of Augustus, but most was built under the rule of Claudius. It seems that the monumental city center, where is the forum and all the buildings necessary for the administrative organization, was built at once, along an axis perpendicular to the sea.
