The Monastery was established in a group of old Moorish palaces and mansions that King John I granted to the Dominican Order in 1382. It was the seat of the University of Santa Catalina Mártir and then, in the 19th century, it became a hospice. Nowadays, it houses the Provincial Historical Archive.
The church has a Renaissance façade and the interior is distinguished by the fresco paintings on the vaulted ceilings. In the courtyard, from the 16th century, the arcade is of particular note. The most outstanding interior feature is the cloister, which dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.
