Jayena Rey is one of a series of villages that form the Poniente Granadino (west side of Granada), which is becoming an interesting reference point for tourists thanks to the characteristics of the AREA. In the vicinity of the Bermejales reservoir, visitors can enjoy the incomparable setting of the north face of the Sierra Tejeda mountain range, which is a striking reddish-brown rock surrounded by the greenery of the vineyards, the yews and pines which in winter is capped by a white layer of snow.

History

The municipality of Jayena (Chayyana for the Moors) has been historically linked, as all the villages in the west side of Granada, to Alhama de Granada. Both were under Muslim rule, then undertook Christianisation after the wars of Granada, and in the 19th century, endured the presence of Napoleonic troops during the war of Independence. However, the urban AREA where the population lived, was destroyed by the earthquake that struck in 1884. Thanks to the financial support given by King Alfonso XII and from all over Spain, the town was quickly reconstructed in the final years of the 19th century.
