Campillo de Arenas
This little village is situated to the south of the province, next to the Jaen to Granada motorway, in the middle of the Southern Mountains.
Its rugged landscape alternates mountains with cereal fields and olive groves. The road link between Granada and Jaen runs alongside the Campillo River.
The village preserves some ruins of the Castle of Puerta Arenas.
History
Henríquez de Jorquera mentions the village as one of the conquests of Fernando and Isabel in 1486, which was given to Jaen. However, it appears to have been founded by Royal Warrant of their daughter, Doña Juana, though this was not effective until 1539, under the reign of her son, King Carlos I.
King Felipe II granted the village the privilege of tax exemption from Jaen.
Its Inns were made famous by travellers such as Merimée, Dumas or Ford.
