The village is situated on the Sierra de las Cuatro Villas (Four Villages) mountains, to the east of the province surrounded by olive groves and cereal fields. Inside the village, we must point out monuments, such as the Church of San Andrés, the Church of the Vera Cruz, the Church of the Convent of Santa Ana, the bullring and the Chapel of el Calvario. Outside the village we find the Chapel of the Virgen de la Fuensanta, Patron Saint of these mountains.

Part of its municipal district is included in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas National Park, the largest protected natural space in Spain: an orographic labyrinth of valleys, calares, gorges, mountains and flat lands of enormous hydrological importance (due to the numerous rivers and streams which spring within the Park); of great botanical importance (different varieties of pine trees and a lot of endemic species); it is also important aesthetically and from a wildlife point of view. Because of this it is one of the most visited and frequented natural spaces in the country.

History

The origin of the village's name is explained in a Letter of Privilege, which is preserved in the Town Hall, given by King Don Enrique to the Archbishop of Toledo Don Pedro Tenorio in 1396, approving that the place known as La Moraleda could be renamed Villanueva del Arzobispo. The village was founded this way, with some bylaws and the obligation of the neighbours to wall the village in five years time.
