The Carnival of Fuentes, declared a festivity of Tourist Interest in Andalusia, begins the week before Lent with what is known as the "Jueves Lardero" or "Lard Thursday", when families gather to have lunch and spend the day together.
The most typical figure of these festivities is the mascara or "mask", which involves disguising your appearance so that no one can recognise you, transforming your body shape with padding and old clothes, and even using a falsetto voice make yourself completely anonymous.
Another distinctive feature of the Carnival is the performances by the murgas, groups of local people accompanied by bass and snare drums, who sing typical satirical songs describing key events in the town throughout the year.
The typical sweet eaten during these festivities is the entornao, a dessert made from flour, water, sesame, sugar, cinnamon and ground red pepper, an ingredient which gives it its characteristic orange colour.
