The local children collect firewood in advance for their bonfires.
Several towns in Málaga Province pay tribute to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria -even though She's from Tenerife, on the Canary Islands. Colmenar, Benagalbón and Fuente de Piedra, for instance, burn their bonfires and make their processions in early February, as part of rituals that go back quite long in time.
Villanueva del Trabuco also has its Virgen de la Candelaria Festival, on 1-2 February at night. For hours before the celebrations, children became big players in town, as they're in charge of lighting the bonfires using the firewood they've been collecting in the woods for a month or so.
Bonfires are lit in all districts, and rag dolls are made -by children, too- to be burned. Other customs and traditions include making circles around the fire and singing folk songs, like "the song of the olive pit."
Locals and out-of-towners alike get warm by the fire, while eating and drinking at the food fair organised by school pupils to raise funds for their field trips.
It's a beautiful, warm festival, La Candelaria.
