The devotion of residents of Cambil to the Cristo del Mármol date back to the 17th century. It is said that one St Matthias Day a mule driver arrived at Cambil. On the back of his mount he was transporting a picture showing an image of the Crucified Christ, which he was taking to El Mármol, near Rus. The painting was piously covered up for the night by the devoted people of Cambil, and when day arrived the mule driver went to put the picture on the animal's back to continue his journey. However, he found it was impossible because of the sudden weight of the object, which was so great that the beast died suddenly. This was taken as a sign that the Santo Cristo, the image of Christ, to be taken to El Mármol did not want to leave Cambil, and so it stayed in the town and is venerated as its patron.

The festivities begin on the last Saturday in February, when the canvas with the holy image is taken to the chapel located on Calle Real, where it will be covered for the night, as was done so many centuries ago. The following day, Sunday, the image returns to the parish church, where a mass takes place and the mayor renews the vow to the patron. This event signals the end of the religious events, but not of the festive atmosphere, which continues late into the night.
