This pilgrimage, declared a Festivity of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia, is celebrated in honour of the patron saint of Pozoblanco and Villanueva de Córdoba. It begins on Sexagesima Sunday, an important day for the Virgen de la Luna Brotherhood.
On Sunday morning, the members of the brotherhood lead the procession of the faithful, on foot and riding horses, towards the Virgin's sanctuary.
After mass outside the shrine, everyone enjoys a day out with friends and neighbours, as well as a pilgrim's lunch. After that it is time to go home, carrying the image of the Virgin to Pozoblanco.
On arriving, the image is welcomed by the local authorities and people, who hand the patron saint the keys to the Pozoblanco and Villanueva de Córdoba sanctuaries, together with the mayor’s stick.
The pilgrimage back to Villanueva de Córdoba takes place four months later, at Pentecost. This way, the Virgin spends four months a year away from her shrine, because the rest of the year she spends an equal amount of months at each town, Pozoblanco and Villanueva de Córdoba.
