click for loging or RegisterLos Alcornocales rises as coastal bastion against the winds from sea winds, both west and east, which, loaded with humidity, cover its forests under a layer of mist that seems to make time stop.
On the western front of the Andalusian mountains, between the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga, this natural area is a succession of rugged mountains of different heights. At the hands of the erosive action of wind, high up in the sandstone there are whimsical shapes with a predominance of gigantic slabs and ferocious cuts. Where there is limestone, such as in Las Motillas, it forms one of the most interesting karstic reliefs of Andalusia, full of caverns and caves.
The abundance of rain results in the existence of a large network of rivers and streams, which flow to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, responsible for causing some of the most extraordinary landscapes of the Iberian Peninsula, the so called "canutos", long, deep ravines, created in the upper coursed of rivers and which provide shelter to a unique plant biosphere.

Fauna and flora
Los Alcornocales, as its name well indicates, has the largest mass of cork oak of the Iberian Peninsula, the mojea, which grows in sunny conditions along with plenty of strawberry trees, phillyrea, and buckthorns; whereas in the shade it alternates with the Portuguese oak and favours the is gall-oak with abundant Moorish and favours the abundant presence of mushrooms. At low levels there is peats, small plant islands plant that retain traces of the ancient forests of wild olive trees alternating with heather, dwarf palm trees, myrtle, crops, pastures and cows, both "retinta" and "lidia" breeds.
The proximity of the Straight favours the presence of birds, because up to 18 birds of prey and many small birds cross the skies or seek shelter along its cliffs. But it is the amphibians and reptiles, half of those on the Iberian Peninsula, and the 11 varieties of bats hidden in its grottos that are of greater importance. Whilst the peaks are the territory of the Spanish ibex, the forests participate in the presence of the roe deer, its spirit, which shares its habitat with genets, badgers and the mongoose.
The true botanical protagonist of the natural area is the laurisilva in the "canutos", a subtropical forest trapped in time. The alders which occupy the edges of the "canuto" prevent the light from penetrating to the bottom of the ravine, where the humidity creates unique mass of rhododendron, laurel, lomatia dentata, laurustinus, alder, holly and bracken that are unusual for these latitudes. While the otter crosses these waters, blackbirds, kingfisher and many dragonflies and caddisflies fly over them, a symptom of the quality of water channels such as the Hozgarganta.
What to do
The disparity of the relief plays a key role in building the wide range of activities in this natural area: Mountaineering - Maximum and El Aljibe, canyoning - Garganta canyons, caving -Ramblazo-Motilla- or exploring its paths, either on foot, by bike or on horseback (routes of La Almoraima), many of them on old paths and cobbled paths, are just a few examples. It is possible to sail on the waters of the Barbate reservoir as well as observe birds in the winter or during migrations. Mushroom picking forms part of the same season, a practice that occurs in the autumn and Jimena de la Frontera is its showpiece.
The cultural offer does not detract from sport and nature, because spots like Castillo de Castellar, the refuge of craftsmen and Bohemians, and that of Jimena, the medieval city of Medina Sidonia, the White Villages of the region, the cave drawings of Benalup, Los Barrios and Jimena de la Frontera, and the Royal Factory of Artillery of this last town are examples of the outstanding monuments that are dotted around these mountains.
All natural space is an ethnographic compendium, as shown by the dykes and mills that escort the rivers along its course, such as Castro de Arriba and El Olivar; stone paths as those of Hozgarganta or the Dehesa Boyal to Castellar, which are like springs, such as Vieja de Castellar; medieval bridges and bread ovens for cooking, such as the Puerto Oscuro. This is also authenticated by La Sauceda, a hideout for bandits and cutlasses, bars, and Moors, witnesses of charcoal-making work that now sleep between enchanted landscapes.

El Aljibe massif is in the heart of Los Alcornocales Natural Reserve, and the visitor centre is in the main town in the region, Alcalá de Los Gazules, between the countryside and the mountains.
Interesting and unique features of this region of Cadiz can be seen in the facilities. Amongst other things, it explains how the current look of the mountains and the countryside does not depend only on the environmental conditions, but also on human action throughout history. One of its other rooms is dedicated to particular ecological and scenic elements of the countryside and the forests. It also offers information on the characteristics of the tree stands, fauna, the resources that man has obtained from the environment, and the area's current uses as a tourist resource.
The reserve‘s tree stands are made up of wild olive groves, thick dark gall-oak groves, the best-preserved cork-oak groves in the Peninsula, and cloud forests and canutos (river valleys), with exuberant and rare vegetation that has been growing here since the Tertiary period. The El Aljibe Botanical Garden in the surrounding area is a good way of learning more about the botanical richness of this area.

The town of Jimena de la Frontera spreads beneath the castle on the slopes of the San Cristóbal hill, in the shade of cork and gall oak groves and riverbank vegetation. Visitors can learn all about the natural and cultural riches of the site at the Jimena information point, located in the old church of La Misericordia, near the castle.
Visitors can also pick up information about the different species of wild mushrooms growing in the area.

El sendero Valdeinfierno discurre paralelo a una garganta que coincide con la Cañada Real de San Roque a Medina Sidonia. Después, el sendero se adapta a un terreno quebrado que nos permitirá conocer la formación vegetal más distintiva de este parque: los canutos.

El sendero La Laguna del Moral penetra en uno de los alcornocales mejor conservados de la península, surcado por bosques de ribera y salpicado de quejigos. Finalmente, lleva a la laguna del Moral, que nos sorprenderá la espesura del bosque.

El sendero Ruta de los Molinos ofrece un auténtico paseo por una ruta que conoció un continuo trasiego económico: carboneros, descorchadores, ganaderos y especialmente artesanos de la molienda; de hay que encontraremos numerosos vestigios: acequias, muelas y molinos.

Al final de la carretera CA-6201 (Alcalá de los Gazules-Patrite), se encuentra el inicio del sendero.

El sendero El Palancar conduce en principio a un quejigal donde se encuentran antiguas viviendas restauradas de los habitantes del lugar, conocidas como moriscos. La humedad en algunos tramos del recorrido se siente presente para, finalmente, ascender hasta un pinar de repoblación.

El inicio del sendero se encuentra en un carril de acceso a los Montes Públicos del Ayuntamiento de Los Barrios, en la carretera A-381, a 18 kilómetros de Los Barrios y muy próximo al área recreativa de Charco Redondo.

El sendero Arroyo de San Carlos del Tiradero atraviesa tres ecosistemas: bosque de ribera, quejigal y bujeo. Asociados a cada uno de ellos, una extensa nómina de especies, vegetales y animales, encuentran refugio y alimento. Como árboles representativos de las distintas formaciones, podremos conocer de cerca el aliso, el quejigo y el acebuche.

De la antigua carretera CA-7200 (Facinas-Los Barrios), a unos 8 km de la autovía A-381(Jerez de la Frontera-Los Barrios, salida 77), parte a nuestra izquierda un carril donde encontraremos el antiguo caserío de San Carlos del Tiradero o Tejas Verdes, punto de inicio del sendero.

El sendero La Teja comienza haciendo un pequeño recorrido por una regeneración natural del bosque y continúa por una pista forestal que se desvía hacia un llano donde abundan alcornoques de buen tamaño rodeados de pinares de repoblación que, en un futuro no muy lejano, serán reemplazados por la vegetación original.

Se accede tomando la salida nº 70 de la autovía A-381, siguiendo luego por la vía de servicio unos 2.500 metros dirección Jerez de la Frontera, hasta una desviación a la derecha que está indicada.

El sendero Travesía del Aljibe cruza la sierra del Aljibe, de vegetación intensa y con continuas huellas de antiguos pobladores, y ofrece unas vistas panorámicas excelentes. Durante el recorrido se atraviesan bosques y saltos de agua, hasta coronar una cumbre de más de mil metros de altura sobre la que planean buitres y rapaces.

El sendero Río Guadalmesí discurre desde las cotas más altas del bosque de niebla, a uno de los canutos más accesible del parque natural, el bosque de laurisilva. Alegrarán los cielos el vuelo de las aves migratorias y residentes.

En el kilómetro 93 de la N-340 (Cádiz-Algeciras), se encuentra el área recreativa El Bujeo, punto de inicio del sendero.

El sendero Subida al Aljibe asciende al punto más alto del parque natural. Ruta de antiguos carboneros y acceso actual de corcheros, el camino conoce todavía el paso de herraduras arrieras que penetran en el alcornocal con sus cargas de corcha a cuestas.

El sendero Garganta de Puerto Oscuro ofrece emblemáticas imágenes del parque natural. Primero el Picacho, silueta inconfundible de estas sierras, y la laguna a sus pies. Después, un frondoso alcornocal salpicado de interesantes vestigios. Finalmente la garganta y el canuto de Puerto Oscuro, espectacular nacimiento del río Barbate.

El sendero Garganta de la Pulga conduce a una de esas fuentes donde sacian sus sed los habitantes del bosque, recorriendo caminos que, en temporada, conocen el paso de las cargas de corcho a lomos de bestias, capaces de acceder adonde ningún otro medio puede hacerlo.

Desde Cortes de la Frontera se toma la A-373 hacia Ubrique en sentido sur. Tras recorrer unos 5 km se llega al área recreativa el Pimpollar, en este punto, se toma el carril a nuestra izquierda en dirección El Colmenar. Recorridos unos 3 km, el sendero se inicia a los pocos metros del puente sobre el arroyo de la Pulga.

El sendero Canuto de Risco Blanco surca entre la magia de estos bosques, a pie de agua o por las faldas de las sierras, un ambiente umbrío y una vegetación sugerente. Al interés botánico de este sendero se le suma el cultural o etnográfico, como hornos, boliches, y viviendas como los moriscos que nos hablan de modos sensatos de explotar el bosque.
