Popular festivities routes

More than three thousand festival events, including fairs, pilgrimages, carnivals and processions, are held in the course of the year in the almost eight hundred towns of Andalusia.

These are manifestations of the love of festivities in Andalusia, and of the people's capacity to celebrate even the slightest of religious and civil occasions in the street, in the countryside and in enclosed spaces.

There is practically no day in the year that goes uncelebrated somewhere in Andalusia, whether it is a village patron saint's day, the end of the harvest, or the anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin Mary. Although the majority of the festivities are closely related to Christian saints, some coincide with older pagan traditions - the summer solstice coincides with the day of Saint Juan, and the winter solstice with Christmas Eve - or with moments celebrating the agricultural calendar. The range of these festivities offers an exquisite opportunity to discover the character and customs of Andalusia's towns. Flamenco, in the form of dance and song, accompanied by the guitar, castanets, drums and the flute, is a principal feature of the majority of the popular festivities, although there are also specific places reserved for listening to this music outside of the festive seasons. Flamenco associations, clubs and festivals are the scene of this genuine artistic expression.
