Antequera, the city of art

In the heart of the vast Andalusian region is Antequera, "the city of white churches and gongoras” as Gerardo Diego would say. It is at the foot of the famous Sierra del Torcal mountain overlooking the profile of the Peña de “Los enamorados”, or Lovers Rock, next to an extensive meadow. Antequera is history and monuments, built over the centuries.

Antequera is just 47 kms from the Costa del Sol and has a population of over 44,000 inhabitants. Travellers should begin their visit to this area with the Museum of the City. This museum is in the monumental Nájera Palace Inside is an unforgettable journey back in time, with special importance being given to the imposing Roman tomb of Acilia and the enigmatic plastic sculpture of Efebo.

From here we can walk to the upper part of the urban framework where the façade of the Santa María Collegiate Church will dazzle you. Inside the majesty of its naves can be seen. Next to it is the Alcazaba, an important place during the Reconquista. But the historic resources do not end here: the Carmen Church, the attractive bullring with its bullfighting museum, etc. are also visits not to be missed during our tour.

Another place you must visit are the dolmens of Antequera, considered the best in Spain and whose best example is the Menga dolmen, a genuine Spanish landmark. On the outskirts of the city is the El Torcal, a natural area of immense beauty where you can see the unusual images that water erosion has made in the limestone.

The Antequera cuisine includes the famous mollete of Antequera, the porra and an exquisite called sweet called bienmesabe.
