La Vieja Day
Type of event: Fiestas
This popular festivity dating from the 17th century was originally a day of brotherhood with religious connotations, as it was first celebrated by a community of Franciscans from the shrine of San Diego on the hill known as El Calvario, in order to provide some respite from the privations of Lent.
Today the Day of La Vieja has become a festive event which attracts a numerous and varied public. It takes place on the Thursday halfway through Lent and consists of a group excursion to enjoy a picnic in the country or on the beach, with an abundance of typical local fare including potato omelette, cod fritters, rice pudding and the typical hornazo: bread with a hard-boiled egg inside.
As its name indicates, the star of this event is "la vieja" (the old lady): a dummy made to look like an old woman and made of coloured paper, wearing a dress, apron, a scarf on her head and her face covered with a cloth filled with sweets and painted with great big rosy cheeks.
This figure is placed where everyone can pelt her with stones, and once she has been broken into pieces, the children can get at the sweets inside her head.
