Between two: Melchora Ortega and David Lagos

David Lagos was born in Jerez de la Frontera, into a family of flamenco enthusiasts, where from childhood he experienced flamenco singing at parties and gatherings. He was ten when he first performed on stage, accompanied on the guitar by his brother, Alfredo Lagos, singing some tangos by his cousin Aguilar de Vejer, which brought him first prize in a school contest. Thanks to his uncle, the flamenco singer Aguilar de Jerez, he started his career at private parties and gatherings for foreign visitors in the wine cellars and festivals of an endless number of villages. However, he soon decided to broaden his knowledge by attending dance schools where he learnt the art of singing “behind” the guitarist to accompany dancers.

Also born in Jérez de la Frontera, in 1972, Melchora Ortega is one of the new voices from Jerez who is currently most in demand. Winner of the prize for songs in a set rhythmic style in Mairena del Alcor and of the 1998 Seville Biennale in the singing section, he represents the very best of flamenco from Jerez, both as a singer and as a dancer.
