Type of event: Exhibitions
The Council of the Alhambra and Generalife has organised a broad programme of activities in commemoration of the American writer Washington Irving. The programme commenced in 2007, coinciding with the 175th anniversary of the publication of the first edition of "Tales of the Alhambra", and ends in 2009, the 150th anniversary of his death.
The "Washington Irving and the Alhambra. 150th Anniversary” exhibition is part of the commemorative programme and evokes the writer’s travels through Europe and Spain, with a particular emphasis on his tour of Andalusia, the city of Granada and his beloved Alhambra.
Comprising original manuscripts, first editions of his books, drawings, engravings and paintings of the finest quality, old photographs and films, interactive exhibits and scale models, this tribute to Irving also offers a delightful insight into the history of Andalusia, its various landscapes and people, a part of its history narrated through other histories.
