Type of event: Fiestas

The procession lasts for 30 uninterrupted hours, commencing at midday on Sunday when the mayor ritually “hands over” the statue of the town’s patron saint.

Saint Anthony Abbot is paraded throughout the whole town, stopping at different houses along the way where the doors are opened to  receive him. In the famous “tiradas del santo”, all kinds of food are thrown from windows and balconies and collected by the people following the procession. The "tiradas” of certain families and the town council arouse great expectation.

The saint’s visit to the cemetery in the early hours of Monday morning is a particularly moving part of the festival. The merrymaking and rejoicing that have accompanied the procession throughout is suddenly replaced by a respectful silence, interrupted only by the sound of the bells on the silver float that carries the statue of the saint.

Prior to this moment, which holds special significance for the people of Trigueros, the animals receive their traditional blessing and the solemn “Procesión de Tercia”, named after the Third Hour of the Breviary, takes place. Other equally important parts of the event are the vespers on Saturday evening and the arrival back at the chapel on Monday, accompanied by the usual “escapada”, when the saint “escapes” and has to be brought back to the chapel.

Trigueros prepares for its main festival throughout the month of January. Bells ringing out daily, novenas, the traditional parades of the pigs that will be raffled at the end of the festival and the bonfires known as "candelas" all combine to create a typical picture of Trigueros during this period.
