Festival of San Sebastián
Type of event: Fiestas
San Sebastián is the witness of honour in the distinctive flag-waving fight which is held in Quesada, Jaén, as part of the celebration of the festival of the martyr and captain of the soldiers, San Sebastián, who is worshipped at the shrine 2 kilometres outside the city.
On the 19th the image is taken to Quesada in preparation for the 20th, a local public holiday and the saint's feast day, when the three flag bearers and the drummer, dressed in period costume, perform five flag- waving ceremonies during the procession to accompany the image of the saint which takes place in the afternoon.
The day ends with a bonfire in front of the door of the Town Hall, when people gather round to enjoy a range of pork dishes accompanied by abundant wine. The festivities end on the 21st, which follows the same programme as the previous day, except that the flag-waving takes place only three times.
