Festival in honour of Saint Anthony Abad
Type of event: Fiestas
From the 16th to the 17th of January the village of Arquillos is celebrating its festival in honour of Saint Anthony Abbot.
The patronage of Saint Anthony dates back to 1885, when the local people from Arquillos asked the Saint to save them from the cholera epidemic, promising to fast and abstain on the eve of the Saint's feast day.
The main role is played by a character called "el pelotero", who runs after everyone trying to hit them on the back with a whip that has a rope-soled shoe on the end.
El Pelotero runs through the village streets and tempts everyone who crosses his path with the delicious cakes of San Antón - a kind of doughnut made with flour and egg-. Before this, the mayor, kneeling at the feet of the Saint makes a solemn vow that all the local people will fast.
