Catherine Wheels of Aracena
Type of event: Fiestas
Every year, during the evening and night of 7 December, bonfires are lit in every neighbourhood in Aracena; and on every bonfire, children burn catherine wheels.
The catherine wheels are made by threading dry chestnut leaves on to a thin olive branch, which is then ignited and twirled in the air until it burns out, creating a trail of flames and sparks with every movement.
The catherine wheel festival is a favourite with children as they are the true protagonists of the event.
