Aguardiente Ojén

Within the Sierra de las Nieves region is a small town of white houses whose name managed to cross the borders of half the world. We are talking about the municipality of Ojén in Malaga, famous thanks to one of its most emblematic products: ojén.

This anise liquor has been making the town famous since 1830, the year in which the businessman Peter Morales began to distil and market it. In a very short time, the unique spirit drink gained public recognition, garnered prestigious international awards and even achieved the title of supplier of the Spanish Royal Family


According to the legend, Morales made the ojén following a secret formula that he kept under lock and key. So much so that he ended up taking it to the grave without passing it on to anyone. In the 60's, local resident Juan Espadas, launched a very similar product on the market, but it did not achieve the same success as the genuine original ojén.

The cultural legacy of ojén inside and outside of Malaga

Great names in art and culture took ojén all over the world, immortalising the liquor in their works. It has been painted by Picasso, described by Rosalia de Castro and the Nobel Prize winner Jose Cela, and even sung about by Joaquin Sabina. There is a very catchy seven-note jingle that refers to this drink. I bet you've knocked on a door to the rhythm of "Una copita...de ojén”!


Currently, those who visit the town will be able to learn more about its history and legend in one of the Ojén Mill Museum. The legacy of ojén can be seen in photographs, containers and materials donated by the locals. As a curiosity, the only remaining bottle of the original liquor is treasured there. It has never been opened and is guarded by the mayors of the municipality.

Ojén is also a perfect complement to accompany one of the most typical desserts of this town: the chestnut stew. Despite its name, this sweet is usually prepared during Lent and Easter. It is made with the dried fruit, aniseed, cinnamon and honey. A real delight for the palate!
