Guided tour of the Hospital de Los Venerables

Discover a Baroque jewel located in the Barrio de Santa Cruz neighbourhood in Seville. It is the Hospital de los Venerables, founded by Justino de Neves for retired and sick priests in the 17th century.

The tour starts with a short guided walk through the Barrio de Santa Cruz neighbourhood that ends at its most easily recognisable monument. First you enter a beautiful reception area and the watchman's house that leads directly to the central feature of the hospital, the church of Los Venerables, where you will find beautiful paintings decorating the walls, the work of Valdés Leal and his son Lucas Valdés, together with beautiful sculptures by Martínes Montañes and Perdo Roldán, revered as the greatest Baroque sculptors in Seville.

After visiting the temple you will stroll through the patio of Doña Elvira that inspired José Zorrilla for the creation of Don Juan Tenorio. After this tour of Spanish literature, the visit takes you to the Velázquez Centre where you will find some of the great works of the 17th century that are a reflection of the religious life in the Baroque era by artists such as Velázquez, Murillo, Zurbarán and Pacheco.

The tour finishes with a climb up a wonderful stairway with an extraordinary Mudéjar coffered ceiling that leads to a Baroque library and the contemporary art centre that marks the end of our journey through time in these magnificent surroundings.
