Greenway of Entre Ríos

Course to the beach

The Greenway de Entre Ríos  connects the towns of Rota, Chipiona and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, to the southwest of the province of Cádiz, and stretches over 16.2 km of the old railway that linked Jerez de la Frontera with Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The line was one of the first in Spain since the granting of the permit for its construction dates to 1830. Although it was also used for transporting people, the main function of this train was transporting valuable merchandise: Jerez wines, in particular to England.

The route starts in Rota, at the roundabout at the entrance to the town district. Rota is a small coastal town, whose inhabitants have traditionally dedicated themselves to agriculture, fishing and, more recently, to tourism, thanks to its exceptional beaches.

Its first section runs between family vegetable gardens and crop fields, mainly cotton fields, separated from the Nature Route by broom, false acacias, fennel and some small eucalyptus woods, where you can always see the most common birds and the odd gull, due to its proximity to the coast.

The route continues until you can see the “Costa Ballena", a large tourist complex surrounded by golf courses, belonging to the town of Rota, from where you go to Sanlúcar along a bike path. From here you can also carry on to Chipiona.
