Zújar
Zújar is located at the foothills of the hill Jabalcón, famous for its baths, which had great prestige in Roman times and in the Arab Andalusian period.
It is also privileged by the proximity of the Negratín reservoir.
History
Its origin traces back to Roman times when it appeared as Hactara in the Itinerary by Antonino. At that time the thermal waters were already utilized.
In the 13th century, Sujayra was a Nasrid outpost against the Advances of Cazorla. It firmly resisted being conquered by the Catholic Monarchs, surrendering eventually with honourable capitulation.
It actively participated in the Moors uprising in 1568. After the revolts defeat and the expulsion of the Moors in 1570, these lands were repopulated with Christians from Castile and Galicia. There is still a large district of caves possibly built in the 16th century by the Moors, who were expelled and returned in secret.
