Correr la Vega

In Antequera, Easter celebrations are really original, different from other Easter celebrations in Andalusia. Kept alive for centuries, they have been designated as a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia. One of the hallmarks of Easter in Antequera is the event known as Correr la vega, so popular with locals and out-of-towners alike. It is based on an old tradition whereby procession images were taken up the town’s steep hills to bless the meadows from the highest point in town.

On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, after the processions, the members of participating brotherhoods (except for La Soledad) take the floats to the foot of a steep climb. When the bell rings, they race up the hill carrying the floats until they can see the meadows and ask the Lord to bless them. It is a moving, heartfelt event.
