Easter week is one of the essential landmarks in the Collective Memory of the people of Archidona and one of the most renowned expressions of its Historical and Cultural Heritage.
Proof of its wider appreciation and importance was its declaration as “Festival of National Tourist Interest”, awarded by the Tourism Department of the Regional Government of Andalusia in 1998.
Easter is a time when sacred celebrations go far beyond local interest, reaching a wider interest and interpretation to become what it is now, a "Fiesta Popular" (Popular Festival) in the anthropological sense. Easter week in Archidona combines a rich historical and artistic heritage together with an interesting and non-transferable intangible cultural heritage by way of a wide variety of traditions and customs, a blend of the elements and their staging. All this makes up a heritage with multiple interpretations (social, cultural, religious, etc.). and which can be enjoyed from a number of personal registers (aesthetic, devotion, sensitivity, learnedness, etc.).
