Benalmádena’s Passion dates back to the early twentieth century, rooted in one of the oldest religious traditions in town. The tradition has been kept alive by locals full of hope and eager to get involved. They stage the most dramatic moments of the Passion and Death of Jesus, as well as other popular Bible scenes, with the participation of about 100 of them. Divided into 35 acts, from Abraham sacrificing Isaac to Jesus’ last words on the cross, the anonymous text dates from the late nineteenth century.
Although similar to other re-enactments of the Passion held in Málaga Province (Riogordo, Cajiz, and so on), Benalmádena’s is based on a rare text combining prose and verse. Also, between scenes there are dances and saeta singing, introducing the audience to the forthcoming events.
