Biography

Diego Carrasco Fernández was born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1954. He started out as a Flamenco guitarist and was known as "El Tate." During this stage of his life he accompanied artists such as Tía Anica la Piriñaca, El Piki El Turronero, Tío Gregorio "El Borrico", Terremoto de Jerez and Sernita de Jerez; and Flamenco dancers like Alejandro Vega and Antonio Gades.

Then rock music crossed his with Miguel Ríos and the group "Guadalquivir", when he acquired a rock sound which was in keeping with his rebellious personality. This period brought his unforgettable collaborations with Paco de Lucía, Manolo Sanlúcar, Camarón de la Isla, and many more. However, he soon became a singer, adopting an unusual style based on the beat.

He created numbers that have been interpreted by such masters as Camarón and Morente. He adapted popular lyrics and children's songs to be sung as bulerías and received recognition in the Seville Flamenco Biennial when in the La Maestranza bullring he presented his show entitled "Y Sevilla”. He took part in the film entitled "Flamenco" directed by Carlos Saura adding vocals to the guitar played by Manolo Sanlúcar in the "alegrías" on his album "Tauromagia".

Diego Carrasco is continually revitalising his artistic career with new ideas and projects, based on his endless repertoire always enriched with new compositions, for which he is always surrounded by young musicians, most of them “Carrascos”. An example of this is "El Tiempo del Diablo”, a show which premiered in 2008 for the 15th Seville Flamenco Biennial where he also puts some fragments of Don Juan de Zorrilla to music.
