Biography

José Domínguez Muñoz was born in Aznalcóllar (Seville) in 1944. His real profession was always that of goatherd until he started working with the Cuadra de Sevilla theatre group, directed by Salvador Távora. There he forged his reputation as a rebel who took to the stage with lyrics protesting against the regime, which made him a very popular artist during the transition.

However, in addition to this, in 1980 he took part in the 9th National Flamenco Art Competition and won the "Mercé La Serneta" Award "unanimously, Premio Nacional de Soleá, and the "Manuel Reyes El Canario” Award by majority verdict Premio Nacional de Malagueña.

He is true to tradition and defends authentic, sombre Flamenco singing without gimmicks, his strong point is Fandangos de Huelva, of which he has a profound understanding, and his repertoire features solearesSeguiriyasMalagueñas and tonás on which he always imposes his unique personality.

He has also recorded albums of Argentinean tangos and has set bulerías to songs by Alberto Cortez.
