Easter Week in Jaén is based on its history, tradition, art, liturgy and popular religious fervour.

Its fraternities and brotherhoods have nowadays become a rich legacy and are an essential part of the Cultural Heritage of the city of Jaén.

Easter Week in Jaén is a perfect blend the sobriety of Castile with the splendour of Andalusia. The grandiose, solemn and colourful processions, the densely thronging crowds, convert the streets into an extension of the temples.

The atmosphere, images, temples, processions, penitents, escorts, "mantillas" (lace veils)… the activity in the city during this week is such that each and everyone of the inhabitants is affected by it.

Most striking is the majesty and beauty of the carved images

The moment of maximum splendour is during the early hours of Good Friday when one of the most eagerly awaited processions leaves the Cathedral: that of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, popularly known as “El Abuelo” (the Grandfather).

On Good Friday, the city of the "Santo Rostro" (Holy Face) salutes the venerable Nazarene, accompanied by more than 7,000 penitents, and shudders in awe as it contemplates the encounter between Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and the Virgen de los Dolores, one of the most emotional moments in this expression of religious feeling which has been making processions through the streets of the city in the early hours of Good Friday for more than four centuries.
