Sixth Historical Reconstruction of the Stonemason-Cacique Fight for Marble

This event continues to earn recognition from all quarters. Most recently it won the prize for the most important intervention to activate the industrial heritage of Andalusia, granted by the Andalusia Industrial Heritage Foundation. The award was collected at the headquarters of the Andalusian Historical Heritage Institute last November.

For the fifth year running, Macael will return to the first half of the 20th century to tell the story of how stonemasons and their families fought to preserve public ownership of their quarries. The event showcases the rich cultural heritage associated with Macael marble stonework: the baskets of food the men would take to the quarry, the use of oxen to transport the marble, the feast of the Virgin Mary, the role of women, the blasts, the blows of the conch, etc.

This year a new scene will be introduced: the celebration of the feast of Saint Mark, a festive ritual which in Macael is closely associated with the quarry because it was the only occasion when the stonemasons' families and girlfriends were allowed to join them at the chalk face for a picnic.
