The celebration consists of four days filled with laughs and colour where people let their imaginations run wild, perfecting their costumes and fine-tuning their chirigotas (humorous musical groups) which they will later enter into the competition, attended by all those interested. The crowing of the "Momo King" and the "Carnival Nymphs" in three categories (children, adolescents, adults) provides not-to-be missed entertainment every year for Nerja residents.
The burial of the Chanquete: On the last day of Carnival, people dress for mourning and cry over the death of the chanquete (a small, edible fish).
