Easter Week in Rute

Easter week in Rute opens, as you would expect, with the popular “Hermandad del Burro” (Brotherhood of the Donkey). This Brotherhood owes its foundation to the initiative and enthusiasm of Jorge Villén Écija who always wanted this passage in the life of Jesus to open the Easter Week processions in his native town, so he acquired a life-sized image from the Religious Art Workshops in Olot (Gerona), representing the Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, which was funded after a proclamation by José María Pemán (Jorge Villén Écija was his secretary) made in the now dilapidated Liceo Theatre-Cinema in the Calle Ramón y Cajal (know as Water Street) in the town of Rute. Its constitution was approved by the Bishop of the Diocese of Cordoba on 26 March 1962.
