Things to do
“San Isidoro del Campo” is a guided tour where you will discover the first monastery created by a private person in the whole kingdom, in this case founded by Guzmán el Bueno in 1301.
It was handed over to the Cistercians, becoming the most southerly Monastery of the Cistercian Order in Europe. Then in the 15th century the Monastery was occupied by the Order of Saint Jerome, and it was here that the most important reforms to Christianity were initiated in Spain, and would eventually lead to persecution under the Inquisition and the creation of the first Bible in the Spanish language completed in 1569. This is where we will find the seeds of the Biblia del Oso (so-called because there was a picture of a bear on the front cover).
A guided tour of this monastery/fortress includes the Claustro de los Muertos, the Patio de los Evangelistas, as well as important features such as the chapter house, the refectory, the sacristy, the churches and the mausoleum of the Guzmans, one of the wealthiest and most powerful noble families.
Their history is depicted through mural paintings, altarpieces, symbology and the legends that abide in this Monastery and will remain forever in your memory.
Come with GuiArte and discover one of the most fascinating and unknown jewels in all Andalusia.
