Guided tour of the Church of Santa Catalina

After being closed for 14 years for restoration, the Church of Santa Catalina in Seville has reopened to the public. Since it closed on 3 June 2004, many people in Seville have forgotten what it looks like or they may even not know anything about it.

Come with us and discover one of Seville's primitive parish churches and because of the blend of architectural styles it is one of the most original churches in the city. It was originally built in the 13th century over what had been a Mosque and it was rebuilt in the 14th century following an earthquake.  It is predominantly Gothic-Mudéjar, but during the high-Baroque period Leonardo de Figueroa built the spectacular Sacramental Chapel (defined by Manuel Jesús Roldán as one of the "most spectacular micro architectures in the city"). At the beginning of the 20th century, the regional architect Juan Talavera y Heredia extensively restored the church.

From the outside you can see the differences between the ochre-coloured walls and exposed brick walls, which show the different eras when different stages of this unique church were built. Once inside, you can enjoy what is an authentic museum of paintings and sculptures. The interior of the church displays some of the best Baroque art in Seville with paintings and sculptures by Luisa Roldán, Pedro Duque Cornejo, Domingo Martínez, etc.
