La Sevilla Mudéjar
In La Sevilla Mudéjar we will take you on a journey through history, exploring art that is unique in Europe, because if we were to select a cultural feature that makes Spain different from other European countries, it would probably be the footprint left by the Islamic culture during the eight centuries it was prominent in our territory. And although there are numerous intangible traces of this Islamic presence, the most tangible would be Mudéjar architecture.
The term "Mudéjar" was adopted in the 19th century to classify all those Christian artistic and cultural expressions that have a clear Islamic origin, be they civil works (Mansions) or religious building (churches). The etymological origin of Mudéjar (“muddayán”) would appear to mean "those who were permitted to stay". But which neighbourhoods were inhabited by the "Mudéjares"? What were their customs and what was their artistic contribution to the Gothic and Renaissance styles?
With this tour we will answer these and many more questions. The route takes us through a number of Mudéjar churches that abound in the north of the historical town centre of Seville, starting with the recently restored church of Santa Catalina. Next comes the nearby parish church of San Marcos, Santa Marina, Ómnium Sanctorum... But we will also see a Mudéjar civil building the Palace of the Marqueses de la Algaba, currently the Museo del Mudéjar.
Com and experience "a familiar and comfortable Orient", as Seville was described by romantic travellers in the 19th century.
