The bullfighting fair

Seville is one of the Spanish cities with most bullfighting tradition, and the Real Maestranza de Caballería is the country’s oldest bullring. For matadors, being carried out in triumph through its Puerta del Príncipe Gate means entering into the annals of bullfighting history.

The bullring is one of the city’s main monuments and has an unusual oval shape. It is located in El Arenal district, a neighbourhood that was home to one of the world’s most important ports in the 16th and 17th centuries.

If you have time, it is well worthwhile exploring its streets and sampling some tapas, and of course the traditional bull’s tail, at local restaurants.

The bullfighting season gets underway with the Easter Sunday fight. It always starts at half past six in the afternoon – a good time to put the fair on hold until the evening and enjoy an afternoon of bullfighting with the biggest names of the moment.
