Cycling through the Lands of Lorca (31 km)

Federico García Lorca is one of the most important Spanish poets and dramatists of the twentieth century. He was born in June 5, 1898, in Fuente Vaqueros, near Granada.

Our meeting point is the Federico Garcia Lorca Park in Granada, at the Huerta de San Vicente, the summer home of the García Lorca family from 1926 to 1936. It is here where Federico García Lorca wrote, totally or in part, some of his major works, among them Bodas de sangre (1932) and  Yerma (1934). The poet was living in the Huerta de San Vicente during the days just before his arrest and death in August 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

Then, we cycle out of Granada following the river Genil southwards. Passing through several small villages (Purchil,  Belicena,  el Jau), and the fertile plain (called La Vega) of  Granada. This plain is a typical landscape of agriculture (even tobacco with the special designed tobacco drying sheds!) and has great views of the Sierra Nevada!

We also pass right through the center of Santa Fé, known as the “Cradle of the Hispanity”, since it was the place where the Catholic Kings culminated the Reconquista and also where the monarchs signed with Columbus the Capitulations that financed the trip of the sailor for the discovery of America.

We continue cycling completely flat towards Fuente Vaqueros passing through some hamlets, connected by a narrow road flanked by poplar trees. We are in the lands of Lorca…you can hear the whispering of the poplar trees, and the water of the river, and see the landscapes he liked so much. We cycle along the house where he was born in Fuente Vaqueros. When Federico was 7 years old he moved to Valderrubio, our last destiny of today, just a few kilometers further. Lorca lived for 4 years in Valderrubio, but after moving to Granada he spend many long summers in this village. It was here, where he wrote the most important works of his youth and where he got inspired to write others, like the theatre work La casa de Bernarda Alba. The house he lived in, a beautiful farmhouse, is the most surprising and less known houses of his life. With the guided visit of this house we finish our experience of Lands of Lorca and return to Granada by car.
