Easter Week in Alcalá del valle, which starts on Palm Sunday and includes a Via Crucis at dusk on Ash Wednesday, has a unique feel about it, mainly as a result of the activity of the three brotherhoods popularly known as the brotherhood of the whites, the purples and the reds. There is enormous popular participation in the processions, since the people identify strongly with them as they parade through the streets with images representing the passion of Christ.
One of the special features of Easter Week in Alcalá is Easter Sunday, the day of the Resurrection, when they parade the traditional Easter bread and the "Carrerita de San Juan" on which an image of the saint is carried through the streets at great speed in search of the Virgen to tell her about the Resurrection of her Son, an evangelical scene with deep-rooted popularity. This led to it being declared a "National Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia" in 2001.
