Antonio Piñana Segado was born in Cartagena in 1913 and died in the same town in 1989. He was one of the masters of Levante singing - he learnt it from Antonio Grau, Rojo el Alpargatero's son. He won the first La Unión festival in 1961 and that made him an icon of the singing in the area
He was recognised several times by flamenco lovers, once in 1965, at the Hotel Mediterráneo in his hometown, with the attendance of authorities, poets, writers and flamenco artists, including Pepe Marchena, Manolo El Malagueño, Canalejas de Puerto Real and José Palanca, and another in 1978, organised by the Pepe Marchena Flamenco Club of La Unión, with the attendance and participation of singers Juan Varea, Ildefonso Pinto, Manolo Romero and El Puebla, and his son, the guitarist Antonio Piñana.
He has also been part of the jury of several contests and has sung in many flamenco conferences He recorded many albums in which he invented his own style, which he named piñanera.
