On the southern slopes of the Sierra de Gádor Mountains you will find the Castala Peri-urban Park, in the municipal district of Berja. This area has traditionally been used by the local population for relaxation and recreation. This is a natural oasis in an area largely covered by intensive farming.

It is an old nursery belonging to Spanish State Forestry, surrounded by interesting places such as the Julbina Riverbed, the Sierra de Gádor Mountains themselves and the Castala neighbourhood. From the viewpoint here you can enjoy an interesting view of the west of Almería province, including another protected nature area nearby, the Albufera de Adra Nature Reserve.

The vegetation around the recreation area is dominated by re-planted Aleppo pines. This species is well adapted to the area's climate, being resistant to heat and long periods of drought. Forest birds stand out in the local fauna. If you stay quiet for a while you may be able to recognise the melodic song of the goldfinch, the brash cry of the magpie and the characteristic cheep of the sparrow.
