A monumental city with a priceless artistic heritage, Carmona can be seen in all its splendour during Easter Week, a celebration combining devotion and sobriety with beauty in its streets and hidden squares. The people in Carmona live each day during Easter Week intensely with processions every day, and they have brotherhoods of great tradition, all of them related to ancient local parishes.
The origin of some of these brotherhoods dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Carmona's imagery is unique and of incalculable value, and a special mention should be given to the Señor de la Amargura. It was carved by Jorge Fernandez Aleman in 1521 and is the oldest dated image participating in the processions during Easter Week in the whole of Andalusia. The Cristo de la Humildad y la Paciencia, an image from the early 18th century attributed to Montes de Oca, is another work of art that can be enjoyed in the processions. Finally, special mention should be made of the abundant craft work which can be appreciated in the objects accompanying the floats, the embroidery, the wooden sculptures and the gold work.
