Biography

David Peña Dorantes was born in Lebrija (Seville) in 1969, into one of the most flamenco families of all times. Dorantes, a pianist, guitarist and composer, is the son of Pedro Peña, nephew of El Lebrijano and grandson of La Perrata He started playing the guitar when he was a boy, together with his brother Pedro However, he really liked the piano they had at home and started to play when he was ten years old.

He studied at the Seville Higher Music Conservatory and he went on several tours with his uncle Juan until, as he says, he "saved enough money to get a decent piano and focus on playing this instrument". He took part in many projects and composed TV soundtracks for several years, until his big break came in the 1996 Biennale Dorantes presented "Ventanales" at the festival and amazed everyone.

Everyone agreed that he provided a new way of playing flamenco piano, because he did not emulate the guitar, but offered new melody and harmony resources, following what he had learnt at home. In 1998 he released "Orobroy", an album with which he consolidated his career.
