Although San Roque has been the Patron Saint of Lopera since 1644, the Baroque Chapel of San Roque is older, dating from the16th century.
In 1582 when the town was suffering from a plague epidemic, the Town Hall and the priests together decided to pray to the Saint for him to eradicate the plague. They made 3 commitments: to build a chapel in his honour, to celebrate his saint's day and to fast as penance.
The festivities in honour of the patron saint, San Roque, are held on 16 August. Today he is the Honorary Mayor of Villa de Lopera.
