Easter week in Priego de Córdoba

Easter Week in Priego is characterised by its solemnity. The different confraternities make stations of penitence with largely uniform and impeccable preparation. Silence and devotion reign among Priego's penitents, who understand in the deepest corner of their hearts that participating in the penitential processions is not just walking an image. In a manifestation of fervour and emotion, the town comes out onto the streets to accompany its magnificent steps, muleteers of extraordinary sculptures. But the festival has a point of contrast with the popular fervour following the ritual held on Good Friday, after a vast quantity of people yearns to be placed under the floats of the Nazarene to carry it up to the Calvary. Carrying the traditional and symbolic “hornazos”, the crowd awaits for the blessing of Jesus.

The beautiful Baroque images and thrones worth mentioning that parade during Easter week in Priego include those of Jesus on the Column, Jesus the Nazarene and Laying Jesus, among others. The value of its images counts with works by Pablo de Rojas, Alonso de Mena and the brothers Diego and José Mora. Priego's brotherhoods show with pride their main images every Sunday of May, exhibited in splendid altarpieces with very profuse ornamentation. The town offers different religious celebrations year-round, and one of the most unique is a secular tradition in which the Brothers of Aurora pray the Rosary every Saturday night.
