De Málaga a Ronda

Land of today´s province of Málaga, except for the area of Antequera, was conquered by Ferdinand and Isabella at the end of the 15th century, and the first parishes in the sea of Málaga were not created until 1505.

Here, the influence is of the valley of the Guadalquivir - ribbed apses - whereas in the remaining lands of the Kingdom of Granada, rib vaulting predominates.

In Málaga, Mudéjar is associated with Gothic in the Church of Santiago, and with the Renaissance in the Convent of La Victoria, La Trinidad barracks and palace of Los Condes de Buenavista. The museum of Bellas Artes has remains of the hospital of Santo Tomás. The itinerary towards the hills of Ronda would include the Gothic-Mudéjar parishes of Cártama, Ardales, El Burgo and Parauta, and the old hospitals of San Juan de Dios and Bazán at Marbella and San Andrés at Coín.

Ronda is certainly worth stopping at, to see the Churches of El Espírtu Santo and Nuestra Señora de Gracia, the Convents of Santo Domingo and San Francisco, the school of San Jose de la Montaña, and the palace of Mondragón.

La Axarquía

Another itinerary of Mudéjar churches can be followed in the Axarquía, whose towers in many cases are the old minarets: Almachar, El Borge, Cútar, Comares, Benamargosa, Benamocarra, Canillas de Aceituno, Salares, Arenas de Vélez, Daimalos, Archez and Corumbela (Sayalonga). The centre of this itinerary is VéIez-Málaga: Church of Santa María and Mudéjar details in the convents of San Francisco and Santa Clara.
