A stroll through the most historic Huelva through the most important places in the epic achievement of the discovery of America. Come on.

Passing through Huelva without discovering its mountains, the flavour of Iberian ham, its extensive beaches and sampling its fried fish… we could say that this is all compulsory and not doing it could be called sacrilege! There are places and experiences that cannot be ignored when travelling and that is why we wanted to invite you — through this report — to take a route that is little known for some: that visits all of those places that were of great importance in preparing for and making the first of Christopher Columbus's voyages to the new continent.

This is a route that has been declared a site of historic and artistic interest in the province of Huelva, and possibly also World Heritage soon, which visits a series of places both in Palos de la Frontera and in Moguer and that, of course, you shouldn't miss.

An area full of historic places where the how and when of the discovery of America will be present at all times.

A route full of spectacular places and curiosities that we hereby encourage you to discover with 5 attractive reasons that will definitely send you off to discover one of the areas of Andalusia with the most history, secrets and legends.

1. Let yourself be surprised by La Rábida

When you reach the Monastery of La Rábida, you will never expect the treasure that awaits you inside.

La Rábida is, undoubtedly, the most emblematic site on the route through Columbus's places.

Here, Christopher Columbus found refuge and support in the monks while making the preparations for the voyage to America. Inside, you will discover the offices where the preparations were made for the discovery…

You can imagine Columbus strolling through the corridors and rooms, which seem intact in time and you will be dazzled by the magnificent 15th-century Mudejar cloister.

In places like this, time seems to have wanted to stop intact. One of the jewels of the province of Huelva that amazes visitors who pass through it.

2. Travel through time at the Wharf of the Caravels

The Wharf of the Caravels is, undoubtedly, one of the most iconic places on the entire route.

A real museum monument to the voyages of Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the old continent.

This place is found not far from La Rábida and you can stroll around, peruse, get on and off 3 perfect replicas of the three caravels: the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa María.

3. An amazing legacy

From works of art such as the frescoes by artist Daniel Vázquez Díaz…

To Gothic-Mudéjar churches full of history, such as the San Jorge, where — in May 1492 — the inhabitants of the area were ordered to give 2 caravels to Christopher Columbus; or the Monastery of Santa Clara, the place of Columbus's famous vow.

And, of course, spectacular chapels such as Santa María de La Rábida or Nuestra Señora de los Milagros.

4. A paradise for the curious!

Do you know why America was named "America”? Did you know that the sailors did not get paid until 20 years after the discovery? Or that women could not visit the new world until 1547?

You will find the answers to these and many other curiosities in the museums in La Rábida and the House-Museum of Martín Alonso Pinzón, where you will have the chance to see tools, objects and other things relating to sailing at the time.

5. See dusk at the monument to Christopher Columbus

And what better place to finish this route than at the majestic Monument to Christopher Columbus.

A monument given to the Spanish people by the United States as a token of gratitude for the discovery of America, measuring 37 metres high with motifs relating to the discovery of America as well as the names of the discoverers who travelled in the caravels.
